Assessments

what is it all about?

Can your child track? If they can’t, then it’s no wonder they can’t read.

Hold up a finger. Ask your child to keep their head still and follow your moving finger just by moving their eyes. Move your finger side to side, up and down and diagonally. Most dyslexic children cannot do this.

Hold up a finger and ask your child to touch the top of it.

If they can’t, then they may not be seeing on 3D.

These are just a few of the things I will test for. Then I will show you what to do about it. This will be special exercises to put in the nerve pathways that should be there.

Why do I need to do an Assessment to help your child?

Assessments take about half an hour for a person who is capable of cooperating, but for children with these problems some extra time may be needed. In five and six year old children it can take two hours because I work in a relaxed way and do not pressure the child.
The tests that I carry out for children assess what is going ‘into’ the brain rather than what is coming ‘out’. In other words ‘what’ the problem is. By itself, no one part of the test is important unless another part confirms the diagnosis.
Parents are present during the testing and it is refreshing for them to be told immediately why each procedure was done, and what it showed. Whether this is explained in front of the child or out of his hearing depends on the child’s age. Exercises to help make the connections that might have been missed are prescribed. Exercises will also be adjusted to the child’s maturity.
Each exercise is designed to feed information into the brain to allow it to control the next step in what would have been ideal development. If a child finds a particular movement difficult, usually within three or four days they are able to coordinate it much better.
Achieving hemispheric dominance is also one of the goals for these exercises. If there is none, then dominance passes from one side of the brain to the other in a chaotic fashion.
For example, if the dominance is switching between eyes, the eyes will flicker, and that makes it hard to read, as words will move.
Try This
Focus on an object on the other side of the room. Hold up your finger while closing one eye and hold the finger in front of the object. Switch eyes. The finger will move away from the object. If this is happening involuntarily while reading, then it is a nuisance as the words will move making reading very difficult.
